I’ve always been pretty good at starting things, as long as someone else had an idea first.
This site is the first real thing I’ll start at 0. And I’m hoping to take it to 10, but the first step to starting something is to start something, or something.
1. Why this, why now?
I’ve never had a side hustle, my side hustle has always been to work more on my main hustle. But I’ve always had an interest in writing, and the big dream since I would stay up til 2:30 in the morning in junior high school to watch Conan was to have a talk show.
People will tell you to bite off something like this, you should have a specific niche. I find that idea to be boring. I’m really doing this because I want to enjoy doing it, and what I enjoy talking about is growing startups and scaleups, balancing that career with family, watching sports and mostly eating chips.
I think the answer to the question of “why now” is two fold. One, I’ve spent six years helping build ZayZoon into one of the fastest growing Fintechs in North America, and I’d like to share some lessons. And the other why now, is my kids are getting older, and I’d like to demonstrate, by example, that you can pursue a career and do some fun stuff, and be good at both.
2. What kind of community are you looking to build here?
I’m using Substack’s specific questions as a template here, and I’m finding it very helpful.
Listen, my third favorite thing in the world is to talk to smart people, my second is talking to funny people, and my first is talking to people who are both. So if through this, I can get the opportunity to do more of that, then I’m in.
3. What can you expect?
I went off book here from the Substack template.

4. Now what?
Well, I would like you to subscribe. Then I would like you to get 5 friends to subscribe. If you don’t have 5 friends, you will after you start talking about all the cool stuff you are going to learn about here.
I'm here specifically for the chip recommendations.
Hmm, your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
FYI - I've used that quote dozens of times, but this is the first time it's applied to an actual newsletter!
